MeshCentral - Vacations, Messaging & Telegram, Bosnian

MeshCentral is an open source, web based, feature packed computer management web site. The big news this week is of course that I am back from vacation and catching up on all the requests. On the technical side, this week has been great with the addition of messaging integration and Telegram into MeshCentral. People often use messaging applications on their phone and desktop and MeshCentral can start taking advantage of this. In addition, work as been done on adding the Bosnian translation to MeshCentral. In detail:

  • Back from vacations. After 6 weeks of vacation in France it’s great to be back and developing new features again. In the last 6 weeks I was in the south of France with visits to Italy, Monaco, Spain and Andorra. I have no idea Andorra even existed until this trip, it’s a fun place. Among 100’s of places I visited, I visited Pont du Gard (left on the picture below) which is the tallest of all Roman aqueduct bridges, and the Millau Viaduct (right on the picture below) which, as of September 2020, it is the tallest bridge in the world. It’s been a wonderful vacation and great to be back. There are a lot of requests on GitHub, no way I will get to all of them quickly but will try to best to solve as many as possible.
  • MeshCentral messaging integration. MeshCentral now has the framework needed to support integration with messaging applications. Ever since MeshCentral added SMS integration, adding messaging was the next logical step as messaging applications are replacing basic SMS and support a wider range of clients. The first and only messaging system that is currently implemented is Telegram, but the code is there to add more going forward. This will make it convenient for users to receive notifications from MeshCentral on their devices.
  • MeshCentral Telegram integration. You can now have your MeshCentral instance send notifications on Telegram. Users will need to associate their Telegram handle with their MeshCentral account. To do this, MeshCentral will send a 6-digit code to the Telegram account and the user needs to type back the code on the site. Once done, MeshCentral can freely sent notifications to that user when needed. Right now, notifications are limited to the same ones used with SMS, but more will come. Instructions on Telegram setup here.
  • Messaging 2FA. MeshCentral can now use a user’s messaging account as a second factor for login. MeshCentral already has many 2nd factor options: Time based codes, FIDO2, YubiKey, SMS, push notification to Android, email and backup codes. Adding messaging makes the process very similar to SMS without the added cost of sending SMS messages. When setup, users will see the new messaging option on the login screen. MeshCentral Router was also updated to support 2FA messaging.
  • Bosnian translation. At the request of the community, an auto-translation of MeshCentral in Bosnian was added, this is the 21st language option in MeshCentral. In addition to this, Croatian and Serbian languages were added to the translation tools for future use. This continues to grow the MeshCentral international community.

Many other features have been added and bug fixes included. As usual, feedback is appreciated. If you see any problems or need support on something, please create a new issue on GitHub or help other users. For more information, visit the portal at https://meshcentral.com.

Enjoy!
