MeshCentral - YouTube Videos, WebP, Zip, Tagging, Versions

In the last few weeks on the MeshCentral YouTube channel, there is a new technical series that going into how MeshCentral is made. So far, two technical videos have been released, one on the history of MeshCentral and another on REST vs WebSocket. As for MeshCentral itself, remote desktop now has support for WebP with the Android Agent being first to make use of it. We have ZIP support in the MeshCentral Router, improved device tagging and agent type and version information. In detail:

  • Latest YouTube Videos. New MeshCentral videos are released every week (Wednesday’s at 8:15am PT). In the last four weeks we added a longer overview presentation of MeshCentral and a tutorial on how to run a multi-domain MeshCentral server. In addition, there is a new technical series that covers the background of the MeshCentral project, how it’s built and so on. As part of the new technical series there is a new video on the history of MeshCentral and a discussion on REST vs WebSocket. The range of videos on the channel should help casual users and expert administrators alike.
  • MeshCentral WebP support. WebP is an image encoding standard promoted by Google that is more efficient than JPEG and so, used to make the Internet more efficient. It’s great for sending images in web pages and can be also be used for in-band remote desktop image encoding. Once the MeshCentral web page determines that the browser supports WebP, it will notify the Agent that WebP can be used. If the agent also supports WebP, the remote desktop images will be encoded much more efficiently with traffic being reduced by almost half. Right now, only the latest MeshCentral Agent for Android supports WebP and so, efficiently data shown in the graphic below was collected using a mobile phone.
  • MeshCentral Router ZIP file support. The MeshCentral Router for Windows has a built-in file management dialog box. With the latest version of MeshCentral, you can select many files on a remote system and have them zipped by the MeshAgent’s built-in compression system. This is great when you want to compress a lot of files on the remote system before downloading them.
  • Improved Device Tagging. One important way you can navigate thru lots of devices on the MeshCentral web site is to tag devices and sort devices by tags. The latest version of MeshCentral has an improved tagging dialog box that shows all existing tags. You can click on a tag to add it to the device making it very easy to quickly tag devices and avoid mistakes when doing it.
  • Agent Type and Version. The device list view now has two new columns you can enable to show the agent type and version. This is great to see briefly if agents have been updated to the latest version and see what agent architecture is being used on all remote systems.

As usual, feedback is appreciated. If you see any problems or need support on something, please create a new issue on GitHub or help other users. For more information, visit the portal at https://meshcentral.com.

Enjoy!
