MeshCentral - YouTube Videos, Android Agent Improvements, Auto-Clipboard

MeshCentral is an open source, web based, feature packed computer management web site. This week we have a major new update of the MeshCentral Agent for Android with new auto-connection setting, branding customization, account name & picture and more importantly remote desktop scaling and optimization support. On top of that we have many improvements to the MeshCentral server, addition of an automatic clipboard feature and more. But first, I want to provide an update on the MeshCentral YouTube channel which is doing very well with a new video being posted every Wednesday. In detail:

  • MeshCentral YouTube Channel. A few months back, the MeshCentral YouTube channel launched with an initial set of videos with more being posted every Wednesday. There are now 23 videos live covering everything from initial installation to more advanced topics like server peering and installation with reverse proxies. The channel has over 7800 views so far and since the last time I blogged about the YouTube channel, 7 more videos have been added with the list below.
  • MeshCentral Agent for Android. This week a lot of updates have been made to the Android agent and version 1.0.14 was submitted and approved for download on the Google Play store, it’s available for download now. Some of the new features are only available when paired with the latest MeshCentral v0.8.66. Here are some of the new features:
    • Account image & name on session connection. Once an agent connects to the server, administrators on MeshCentral can open remote desktop and file sessions to the agent. The agent will now display the user’s account image and name when a session is active.
    • Automatic connection setting. There is a new settings option in the Android agent to enable automatic connection. When active, the agent will attempt to connect to the server automatically and try to reconnect if the connection is broken. This is perfect for unattended devices.
    • Remote desktop scaling support. The Android agent is now capable of scaling down the remote display before sending it to MeshCentral. This is important since some Android devices have very large displays and this option allows for much less data to be send back to the server for a much faster remote desktop experience.
    • Remote desktop optimizer. Before this version, the entire screen was sent as a single JPEG when any portion of the screen had changed. With this new version, the screen is split into tiles and only portions of the screen that have changed are send back to the server making the remote desktop experience much more efficient. A tile recombiner optimizer is also included, so if many adjacent tiles have been changed, they all get sent as a single image.
    • Agent branding. You can now configure branding name and image on the server and when the Android agent connects to the server, it will take on that branding. This is perfect for people that want to put their own company brand and logo on the agent to make it their own.
  • Automatic Clipboard Feature. On the MeshCentral side, last week an automatic clipboard feature was added so that when you copy some text on the administrator computer it’s automatically sent to the remote computer. This feature is available for both the remote desktop viewer on the web site and the remote desktop view in MeshCentral Router. When enabled, just copy some text locally, move to the remote desktop and paste it.
  • Device Security Status Export. When exporting device information as a CSV file, the exported data now includes the Windows Security Central date for firewall, Windows update, and anti-virus status. Super useful to quickly keep track of issues with your systems.

Moreover, many more fixes and improvements have been made to MeshCentral. As usual, feedback is appreciated. If you see any problems or need support on something, please create a new issue on GitHub or help other users. For more information, visit the portal at https://meshcentral.com.

Enjoy!
